The world is rapidly being reshaped by technological advancements including e-mobility, renewable energy, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things. These emerging technologies provide creative solutions for today’s economic and social challenges and, unsurprisingly, have proven more likely to be developed, advanced, and successfully capitalized on by companies that foster a culture of continuous innovation. But that’s not the only contributing corporate variable.
Innovation on this scale is a complex process that requires special skills, a robust design and engineering process, a commitment to tracking and effectively responding to shifting customer demands, and internal processes that support collaboration and innovation. Internal organizational processes that don’t explicitly support collaboration and innovation can instead stifle it, leading to disorganization and inadequate resources.
As a global industrial technology leader and a go-to engineering partner for innovative companies in many different industries, TE Connectivity has experienced several of these challenges firsthand, and we know that we’re not alone. So, to better understand these challenges and identify innovation trends that we can track over time to help technology leaders prime their businesses for continued success, we surveyed engineers and executives around the world to see how they perceive these challenges and identify areas of opportunity for future growth.
We conducted our inaugural Industrial Technology Index survey between July 27 and August 9, 2022, and included professionals from the wireless technology, 5G, data, cloud computing, AI, automotive, industrial machinery, energy solutions, sensor applications, commercial and home appliances, aerospace and defense, and medical device and technology industries.
The survey indicates that innovation is a top priority for most companies and that they’re committed to making the investments necessary to achieve their innovation goals, but that they face several roadblocks that can impede innovation.
TE Connectivity’s 2023 Industrial Technology Index identifies 10 key findings and five steps for improving both the pacing and efficacy of innovation efforts. Key takeaways include that engineers and executives have differing views on the definition of innovation and the pace at which it’s achieved and are not aligned on the importance of implementing sustainable practices within their organizations.
