Power Distribution Blocks

Power distribution blocks are an easy, convenient way of distributing an electrical circuit to different devices. Whether for industrial or commercial use, you will find that they are capable of handling the routing of circuits across a range of applications.

If you are searching for a suitable power terminal block for your project, you will find what you need here at RS. We stock hundreds of variations designed to suit a range of outputs. Plus, these products are made by established manufacturers and can be shipped to you today.

Read on to find out more about how a power distribution terminal block could suit the job you’re working on.

What are power distribution blocks?

A power distribution block (also known as a power terminal block or an electrical distribution block) distributes electricity from a single input (power) source across several devices in a circuit. It is also used to isolate any incidents where short circuiting occurs, preventing the circuit from completely shutting down.

Typically, there’s one input and multiple outputs, which allows for several devices to connect to the distribution block. This saves you having to plug devices into individual power sources and enables them to easily and safely share one electrical circuit.

There are two types of power distribution blocks. The first is a bussed (or enclosed) terminal block that allows a larger input cable to branch out across several smaller cables. The second are independent blocks, which consist of connections that are 'independent' from each other, so that multiple individual circuits can be routed to a single location. Here, each circuit can each have several connections going to it.

Power distribution terminal blocks come in a range of styles and shapes. Some of the key features include the input and output voltages and amperes, the number of inputs and outputs and any additional features, such as if it has enclosed power distribution.

Where are power distribution blocks used?

Rather than connecting every output device to the power source, you can use a power distribution block to streamline the circuit. This makes them a suitable product for industrial settings, where more than one device is consistently in use. For instance, they can often be found in factories and warehouses where electrical circuits need to be dispersed securely and safely.

Power terminal blocks can also be found in other industries. They are useful for a variety of functions, such as providing an electrical supply to heating and cooling systems and ventilation machinery.

They are also used in the supply of power in the energy industry, distributing electrical currents across solar and wind sources; in electronic applications, such as lifts and escalators; and in charging stations for electrical vehicles.

What are the advantages of using power distribution blocks?

There are several reasons to invest in an electrical distribution block. First, it saves energy as it connects a single power supply to several devices at once. This also makes arranging the devices across the electrical circuit more efficient.

Another advantage is that there are fewer wires to organize as everything is safely arranged. This makes it less of a hazard for those working and visiting the industrial space.

Additionally, it is easier to scale the circuit when using a DC power distribution block. This allows users to plan the electrical supply, making it a useful tool for events such as concerts and sports events.
