What are discrete semiconductors?

A discrete semiconductor is a device that is made to perform an elementary electronic function - it is not able to be split into separate components that can work on its own.

The conductivity of a semiconductor changes depending on the environment and circuit it has been placed into. Semiconductors have enabled electronics to become faster, smaller, and more reliable within their circuits, meaning that they can be used for a whole range of different products and devices.

What are the different types of discrete semiconductors?

There are numerous different types of semiconductors, most of which are inexpensive and can be used as basic parts in electrical engineering. The most common types are:

Bipolar Transistors
These types of discrete semiconductors are commonly used in analog circuits. They are called 'bipolar' because their carriers use both positive and negative charges, meaning that they have both electrons and holes incorporated in their operation.

Bridge rectifiers
Bridge rectifiers are made from diodes that have been arranged in a specific order. The 'bridge' can convert inputs of alternating current into direct current. This is a basic function that most electronic devices require.

Constant Current Diodes
These semiconductors are different from others due to the way they regulate current instead of voltage. The diode keeps the current at a specific level when it reaches the limit. These are also known as current-regulating diodes (CRD) and current-limiting diodes (CLD).

Darlington Transistors
These essentially act as a two-in-one semiconductor and both act to amplify the current that passes through them. The first transistor will amplify the current to one level, then the second amplifies it further.
