Industry 4.0 has been a popular topic of conversation as industries and individual companies look to unlock the potential offered by automation. But the reality of Industry 4.0 has not fully arrived yet. The pressing question therefore is, what will it take to get there, and what will industrial settings look like when that time arrives?

For industrial communications, this looks like pure, seamless data transfer, regardless of communications protocol, location or device. However, it may be a decade or two before this is typical in most industrial settings.
